Moving

Another post about moving. I can’t really think of anything else to write about. I am moving. Everything is in a container about to be shipped. Right now I’m in the car to the Frankfurt airport. I’ll be flying tomorrow.

Alvin in the van

I’m going to the Frankfurt airport so that Alvin doesn’t get too scared. He hasn’t flown before, so he’ll already be a bit scared without transferring. There are no direct flights from Munich to Portland. The flight’s 10.5 hours long, so Alvin will not be able to eat. He had his last meal before the flight when I left the hotel. I just can’t believe how fast things have gone.

A bit about this design

In this post I wanted to write a little bit about how this design happened. A few years ago, when Drupal 5 was the latest version, I decided to create a custom theme for my site. I found some videos bout how to modify Zen, and I used those to get started changing the CSS files. I created some images, and a (bad) logo. That’s where the header gloss came from.

My original attempt at a site

Later on, when I got a twitter account, I created some stripes as my background, and it is still on there today. I took those stripes ad used them as my background here. Everything else came from the Newsroom-Cucumber template for SquareSpace.

I used some different themes for my site when it was using Drupal 6 because I didn’t feel like upgrading my old theme (created with Zen’s old theme structure), due to some big changes. See this page at the bottom for details. Basically, it says that the version of Zen I was using was so old that the developers had forgotten to make it easy to upgrade. If you download the theme today, it is a lot easier to upgrade. Just follow the instructions on the page.

Squarespace makes things a lot easier. I just had to set the gloss as the background for the header, set repeat-x, and margin -60px for the header, and for the main background I just set the twitter stripes and chose the secondary color, a slightly darker green. A lot easier, and no need to play around with CSS.

Squarespace & Moving

Some Boxes (yes, I did take this photo at my house)

I’ve decided to switch to Squarespace for a while, since my server, which holds my current (now past) website will be stuck in a ship for a few months. I’ll be using it and seeing how much I like it compared to Drupal. Once I get my server back I’ll decide what to use. The movers came and packed the boxes today, and tomorrow they will finalize packing and load everything onto the container. It’s crazy how fast time has gone by. Today they are loading everything into a container, and then it will be on a ship for a few months. I hope Alvin doesn’t get too confused.
